Ambassador to Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro – Will be presenting Opening Remarks at the Annual Forum

Giles Norman (BA Hons, Lancaster University, 1990; LLB, Queen’s University, 1996) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1999 after being called to the Bar of the Law Society of Ontario in 1998. His overseas assignments include political officer in Ankara (2001 to 2004), political and trade counsellor in Colombo (2007 to 2009) and first-ever director of the Canadian International Centre for the Arctic Region in Oslo (2009 to 2012), where he also served as chargé d’affaires for 9 months. After Oslo, he was posted to New York City until 2016 as the counsellor (legal, human rights, humanitarian) and legal counsel at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations. At Headquarters, he has held a series of posts in the Legal Bureau and was deputy director of the Maghreb and Persian Gulf Division (2004 to 2007). Most recently, he was executive director of the Defence and Security Relations Division.

Deputy Chief Economist & Director,
Research & Analysis Department, Export Development Canada

Stuart Bergman is the Deputy Chief Economist and Director of Export Development Canada’s (EDC) Research & Analysis Department.

Mr. Bergman joined EDC in 2003, and has held various leadership positions, including Director of EDC’s Economic and Political Intelligence Centre, Director of Corporate Strategy and Vice President, ESG. Between 2011 and 2016, he served as EDC’s Deputy Chief Economist, representing EDC as a featured speaker at international conferences and policy fora, and regularly appearing on television, radio and in print media.

In his current role, Mr. Bergman oversees EDC’s global markets research, advising senior management and the Board of Directors on portfolio risk management, corporate planning and business development priorities. He also contributes to EDC’s economic analysis and forecasting and country risk assessment.

Prior to joining EDC, Mr. Bergman worked for Zurich Emerging Markets Solutions and the Foreign Policy Institute, in Washington, DC. He completed his graduate studies in International Economics and International Relations at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He currently resides in Ottawa, with his wife and three children.

Kalev Ruberg

VP Future & Chief Innovation Officer,
Teck Resources Limited Vancouver, BC, Canada

Kalev Ruberg has played an influential role at Teck since 2006, when he joined the organization as the Chief Information Officer and VP. His responsibilities included the overall digital systems, services and projects for this global mining company. His most recent promotion to the VP Future and Chief Innovation Officer, sees him defining the future of mining at Teck. And in addition, in 2020, Kalev was also appointed adjunct Professor at the Keevil School of Mining Engineering at UBC. He serves on advisory Board of the National Research Council’s Energy, Mines and Environment Division and on the board of UBC’s Bradshaw Research Initiative for Minerals and Mining. As incoming chair of the Global Mining Guidelines group he brings vision and leadership to this international mining technology organization.

Kalev has been active in the information systems arena for over 45 years. As a BSc and Masters graduate from MIT, he studied at the Architecture Machine Lab (now the Media Lab) before carrying out digital simulation research at the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) in Washington DC, University of California Berkeley Labs, and then at Georgia Tech, as an assistant professor.

In 1982 he joined Canada’s National Research Council in Ottawa, as a Senior Research Scientist where he developed a number of machine learning algorithms in the artificial intelligence field. Joining IBM Global Services, he designed and deployed large machine learning, AI and advanced control systems for IBM Manufacturing and clients worldwide.

Building on his experience, in 1997, Kalev was appointed the CIO and Deputy Minister to the Finance Minister, at the Government of Manitoba, where he was responsible for the government’s Information Services. Subsequently, he led development at a B2B e-commerce company, and then became a VP at TELUS, where he was responsible for Application Development, Business Development, and development of the IT strategy and offerings for TELUS’ Healthcare vertical.

Before moving to Teck, Kalev was the CIO and Executive General Manager for Information Services at Placer Dome, formerly the largest gold mining enterprise in the world here he led the restructuring of technology services worldwide.

Kalev has published more than 30 papers in proceedings and journals. In 2018, he was named to CIM Magazine’s 2018 Names to Know.

Andrea Ruotolo

Global Head of Customer Sustainability/ESG at Rockwell Automation

Andrea is the Global Head of Customer Sustainability/ESG at Rockwell Automation, the world’s largest industrial automation company, with responsibility for advancing innovation in sustainability for Rockwell’s customers, which include Fortune 100 companies in energy and manufacturing, representing millions of employees and hundreds of billions of dollars in annual revenues.

Across her 18 years’ experience in leading technology innovation, in a career spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, Andrea has held multiple senior executive roles focused on applying advanced technologies to solve the sustainability challenge. She has served as co-founder and entrepreneur in smart grid consulting, global lead in the world’s largest engineering services firm in the energy sector, and senior director at a major utility.

As well as her Fulbright Doctorate on sustainable energy systems, Andrea holds a B.A. and M.Sci. in Engineering from Madrid Polytechnic, and certification in Digital Business Strategy from MIT Sloan School of Management.

Vice President, Ontario, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited

Mr. Leite is Vice President, Ontario. Prior to this role, he was Vice President, Technical Services for Kirkland Lake Gold (2021 – 2022). He has held senior leadership roles with Detour Lake Gold and Vale Base Metals in Canada, Australia and New Caledonia and began his career in Brazil working in the iron ore and mine technology industries.

Eric Strom

Head of Strategic Studies Canada, Newcrest

Eric brings more than 25 years of engineering, operational and project experience, including 12 years in Management and other Executive roles for Newcrest, Newgold, Rio Tinto and China Molybdenum Co. (CMOC). Eric was a Director of Serengeti Resources through the successful merger with Sun Metals and launch of NorthWest Copper in 2021. Eric has spent ten years building, operating and overseeing block cave mines including New Afton in Kamloops BC, and Northparkes Mines in Australia. Eric graduated from Queen’s University in 1995 with a degree in Mining Mechanical Engineering and started with Placer Dome in Timmins, Ontario. Over his career Eric has worked across Canada, Australia and the United States. He is currently working for Newcrest as the Head of Projects in Canada, focused on their newest project, the Red Chris Mine. Previous roles included Vice-President Projects and Innovation for Titan Mining, Director Underground Mining for Newgold, Mining Manager for Rio Tinto at Northparkes Mines, and superintendent of the Projects and Technical Teams building the New Afton Mine in Kamloops BC. Eric is a strategic thinker and champion of practical innovation and brings a deep understanding of the business of mining in Canada and abroad.

Dennis Stansbury

Senior Vice President , Engineering & Project Evaluations – B2Gold

Dennis Stansbury has served as our Senior Vice President of Engineering and Project Evaluations (and prior to that our Senior Vice President of Development and Production) since March 2007. Mr. Stansbury is a mining engineer with over 40 years of engineering, construction, production and management experience at surface and underground mines in fifteen different countries. After working for a number of gold mining companies in South America and the United States, he joined Bema Gold as Vice President South America in 1994 and was appointed Vice President of Development and Production in 1996. Mr. Stansbury has a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering from Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology.
