- France-based Orano SA signed an agreement with Uzbekistan's state-owned Navoiyuran to advance the "industrial development" of the South Djengeldi uranium project, Orano said in a news release. The project is expected to sustain production over a decade with a peak of 700 metric tons per year of uranium, Orano said. Orano and Navoiyuran will advance the project through their Nurlikum Mining LLC joint venture. As part of the agreement, Japan-based Itochu Corp. is acquiring a minority stake in the joint venture. - First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is taking steps to suspend its arbitration against Panama over the closure of its Cobre Panama copper mine, after President Jose Mulino said his government will review the mine's future this week, Reuters reported citing an internal memo. "We have instructed our lawyers to meet with the government's legal team to work on suspending the arbitrations ... leading to a solution that benefits workers, communities, suppliers and all Panamanians," said Manuel Aizpurua, manager of Cobre Panama, in the memo seen by Reuters. - PT Freeport Indonesia is seeking approval to export copper from its Grasberg copper mine following recent regulatory changes, Tony Wenas, the company's president director. "In October, we experienced a fire, and the fire was declared by the government, based on the results of an investigation from the Criminal Investigation Agency and also from insurance, as a force majeure event," Wenas said during a parliamentary hearing broadcast on social media. On March 5th, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) amended an existing regulation to allow export sales from companies with a force majeure declaration. READ MORE
