Navarro, who supports fossil fuels and trade protectionism, served in Trump's first administration. As a senior counselor to Trump's next administration, he will seek to help Trump roll back environmental regulations and ratchet up oil production. - The government of Mali issued an arrest warrant for Barrick Gold Corp. CEO Mark Bristow over alleged money laundering and violation of financial regulations, Reuters reported, citing a document it obtained. - BHP Group Ltd. signed a new memorandum of understanding with China-based steelmaker HBIS Group Company Ltd. to advance decarbonization in the steel value chain, the diversified mining giant said Dec. 4. Building on partnerships that started in 2021, the new agreement will extend efforts to include steel end users and promote the low-carbon transformation of the industry by evaluating life-cycle carbon reduction projects. The new deal will focus on further assessing larger-scale blast furnace abatements, optimizing the use of iron ore from BHP's Australian operations in commercial direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace (DRI-EAF) production, and implementing life-cycle assessment projects to track greenhouse gas reductions. - Rio Tinto Group signed an agreement with Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Corp., Swedish investment company Vargas Holding AB, and other partners to study the development of a low-carbon aluminum project in Finland. If it goes ahead, the Arctial project would be the first primary aluminum development in continental Europe in more than 30 years, Rio Tinto said. READ MORE

- Nevada Gold Mines LLC, a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Corp., entered into a decarbonization partnership with Quaise Energy Inc. The companies will explore additional decarbonization for Nevada Gold Mines' TS Power Plant in Nevada through the use of geothermal heat. Nevada Gold Mines recently finished building a 200-MW solar power plant and is modifying the TS Power Plant to use natural gas as a fuel source. The joint venture will investigate deep geothermal energy sources in partnership with Quaise. "Nevada Gold Mines is targeting an overall 30% reduction in [greenhouse gas] emissions by 2030." READ MORE
